Research Officer
Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Australia
Dr Etienne Masle-Farquhar is a postdoctoral researcher (1.5 years post-PhD) working with A/Prof Owen Siggs and Prof Chris Goodnow at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. Etienne leads the experimental arm of the Genomic Medicine Lab, and leads the Arthritis Project, an expanding, Garvan-led collaborative effort applying novel single-cell genomics to understand the mechanisms behind rheumatoid arthritis, gout and psoriatic arthritis. Etienne's ongoing research focus is on the role of acquired gene mutations in rare and common inflammatory diseases.
Etienne studied Honours in Immunology with Prof Anselm Enders at the Australian National University, and did his PhD studying monogenic causes of autoimmune disease with Prof Chris Goodnow and A/Prof Joanne Reed. Etienne's research has uncovered mechanisms by which genetic mutations affecting various molecular pathways can dysregulate adaptive immune cells to promote autoimmune disease and inflammation. This has led to recent high-impact publications in Immunity, Cell Reports and others. Etienne's primary areas of expertise are in immunology, cellular genomics, clinical immunology and mouse modelling.
