Dean Sheppard is a Professor of Medicine at University of California, San Francisco. His laboratory has been studying the in vivo biology of members of the integrin family of receptors for the past 30 years and identified the role of a subset of integrins in activating Transforming Growth Factor beta, a central process in regulation of tissue fibrosis and anti-tumor immunity. Recently, the lab has been focusing on the mechanisms underlying tissue fibrosis with a focus on the heterogeneity of cells historically called fibroblasts and developing unique tools to identify, delete or modulate gene expression in multiple distinct fibroblast subsets to study the roles these cells play in tissue homeostasis and disease.
