My projects aim to better understand the pathophysiology of pneumonia, focusing on host-microbiome interactions. I am particularly investigating the spatiotemporal adaptation of tissue-resident macrophages during and after acute lung inflammation. I use state-of-the-art "omics" approaches coupled with comprehensive bioinformatics to generate hypotheses, which we then test in animal models and patient cohorts. I also received funding from the European Research Council as coordinator of a Horizon H2020 for the development of immunotherapies for hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP 2 project) during which I am coordinating three randomized clinical trials for the prevention and treatment of pneumonia in critically ill patients.
